Our Mission
It is the mission of The Oklahoma Association for Gambling Addiction Awareness to educate the general public, legislators, medical, mental health and legal professionals, credit counseling professionals, the credit industry and others to the devastating affect that addictive gambling has on the problem gambler and his family and to push for reforms in legislation, gaming regulations and public and corporate policy to address the inevitable damage that results from legalized gambling.
The statistics used on this site are not actively being updated, however you can assume that the as time passes the number of individuals and families that have experienced difficulties due to gambling have increased, the number of casinos are increasing and the negative impact due to gambling on society is increasing. The site is maintained in order to provide information for those seeking information regarding gambling addiction and while progress is being made in the availability of treatment, the basic issues surrounding gambling addiction, i.e. the affect on families, the steps used to protect your finances, will not change substantially over time.
The Oklahoma Association for Gambling Addiction Awareness does not oppose legalized gambling, if for no other reason than there is far too much money being made by the gaming industry, the states, Native American Tribes and local economies for legalized gambling to ever go away. However, we are trying to bring the negative consequences of legalized gambling into the open so that those whose lives have been and will continue to be blighted by gambling addiction can have some hope that they can recover.
It has been said that the compulsive gambler has an emotional problem with financial consequences, but for the family of a compulsive gambler it is a DIRE FINANCIAL problem with emotional consequences.
